Fame - Glamour - Popularity: All of these terms are synonymous with the people working in the world of media. While this very fame can bring in tremendous amounts of money and pride, it doesn't guarantee happiness. It doesn't guarantee success.
Sridevi, a household name in most of Indo-Pak homes is no more and many are mourning. Legend that she was, this was expected. They say she died of a cardiac arrest. But is that really it? A little Google will tell you that cardiac arrests occur due to heart rhythms going abnormal. Again, is that really it? Are we getting the whole picture here? No. We are not.

Apart from diabetes and HDL issues; stress, depression, anxiety are major factors that lead to this cardiovascular disease. Sridevi too wasn't free from such depression. Being the decades old name in the film industry she was; she too had to fulfill demands of her fans. Yes, she was stressed. Yes, she was under pressure.
Night before her death in Dubai - Sridevi |
She was above 50 yet the society demanded her to look below 40. And she was in a quest to make sure she conformed to those demands. Her life had become a quest. Continuous surgeries and makeovers: the journey for a wrinkle less face and a size zero weight was never ending.
I've read about her regular visits to a clinic in Southern California in order to achieve the 'dream beauty' the society was demanding, the fans were pressing upon. She was so lost in this artificial world of glamour that herself became a fake show of beauty without a soul. The hidden sadness in her smiles were not hidden anymore.
Not long ago did Sonam Kapoor write an article that went viral discussing how fictitious and afar from reality the world of glamour is and how the young girls aspiring to become like the billboard celebrity should be discouraged. It was indeed an eye opening piece. And well that article may have opened our eyes, the demise of Sridevi should be enough to shake us make us say no to running towards fake standards of beauty.
We need to look around. See what's happening around us. See what's happening in the western world. How people are running towards surgeries, makeovers to meet the standards of beauty set by the society. And when these people don't meet the results they expected they fall into depression. Just another reason why drugs are becoming more and more common in today's youth.
Everyone is beautiful in how they are. Stop dreaming to look like the girl on that billboard or the magazing cover you get every month. It's not natural. It's what she got after sacrificing her family life, her social life, her money, her diet, her choices, her freedom: in essence her whole life. All for what? Just to meet the standards set by the media and the overall society.
Life is about being happy and content from within because when you fail to get your mind in peace, when your inside is sad, you fell victim. Sridevi also became a casualty of the unending demands of this selfish world. Many more before her. The society used Sridevi to kill Sridevi. Don't let the society use you to kill you.
Be happy and content with what you are and how you are. Be grateful in what you have got. Stop running around to achieve fake standards of beauty. There's no end to it. You can never make everyone happy and even if you do, you will not be happy from within. And that should be enough to make you stop. Nothing is better than inner happiness and peace of mind. Nothing.
